I think this is beneficial because even though some wouldn't say, we live in an area with plenty of segregation. It's just that there is not a lot of racial diversity, so we don't see it. This happens all throughout the book. In our time today there is still racial segregation. Most of the time its not something too serious, but a joke or phrase could affect someone that overheard you talking. Today, people still judge others on the color of their skin and race. I think, Barack Obama becoming president is a huge step foward but we still have much to work on in this country & world. Ellie and Miah chose to ignore the comments and stares that people gave them and learned to only focus on eachother. They truely did love eachother. It would be very different if it was told from Jeremiah because it would have stopped when he died! The story was written in my opion however, in a way so that the 3rd person POV isent revield to be Ellie till the end. I think that if you had done it in a way that you could tell that it was Ellie's PoV from the Beging you would have seen the story in a diffrent way. If it was told from Jerimiahs PoV you would not have the ending in which Ellie is reflecting on that year with Miah. So the ending of the story would have been changed. She chose to write it this way because she wanted to show how much Ellie cared for Jerimiah and how their love lived on even after he was killed. It was her first love and she wasn't going to forget about him. By the way Woodson wrote that particular scene it sounded like Miah was worried about his safety. I can learn from this that people shouldn\u2019t be treated differently when they look different. She trys to show from this book that two people can fall in love who are compltetly different people who come from different families and neighborhoods. Woodson maybe had to deal with these incidents in her life so she shows how people handled the situations. She describes things well of how they were treated and I think the couple handled the situations well. I have always known that it it wrong to judge someone because of the color of ones skin or their appearance or background. People stare and hate what they can't and won't try to understand. That shallow people are the ones who take offence. Depending on how serious the incident is , I probably would stop to say something . I might wait until the incident stops and come up later to try to see if I could help but I wouldn't want to involve myself in someone elses business. I probably would ask the person or poeple involved if they were okay and if there was anything I could do to help. I wouldn't just ignore the problem but handle it by trying to help. I know if I was involved , I would want someone to stop and say something, so I'm sure the people who are involved in racial discrimination like the ones to stand out and say "hey thats wrong what your doing" or something. When things are said under their breath, sometimes people can hear them and become offended. Its always good to watch what you say and how the others around you would feel. If your not sure, its better just not to say the comment. Being of a different color than your neighbors brings diversity to a community. But the problem with that is that people (students mostly) are afraid of being seen as "snitches", which is very cowardly and selfish, in my opinion, because they'd be willing to let an innocent person be victimized just so they wouldn't be looked down upon by some of the worst kind of people. \nOne of the things in the book that really sticks out to me is when Miah was sitting in his mothers room looking at the pictures. He started to cry and then he murmured "daddy" and "mom".
