The Setting of If You Come Softly If You Come Softly takes place in New York, mainly between Manhattan and Fort Greene, Brooklyn. The story takes place two years before the story was written, because at the end you realize that Ellie (the main character
"Doorman at the apartment" by Claire
) has just been reminiscing about her life before. The story mainly takes place between the summer, June mostly, and winter, until about February. Ellie and Jeremiah have a relationship their sophomore year of high school.
Ellie lives in a large, two-story apartment at Eighty-Eighth and Central Park West, which is in Manhattan, with her mother and father. There is a strange emptiness to the air, since it is only Ellie and her mother most of the time because her father is a busy doctor. The apartment is very big, with many large rooms, that previously housed Ellie's older siblings, who are grown and out of the house. The apartment building has a doorman named Henry always waiting to help people out of the rain or carry their luggage.
Jeremiah lives in Fort Greene, Brooklyn. It is mainly a black neighborhood, and judging by the text, it is where Jeremiah feels the most comfortable. You can always hear a basketball dribbling somewhere in the area. He switches living with his divorced mother and his father, who live across the street from each other. His mom's house is a large apartment, that used to house his mother and his father, while they were still together.
A classroom, like those at Percy
In the book, he repeats how much he loves his mothers' kitchen, he describes it as a warm, sunny place, with lots of golds and browns, that make you feel right at home. He always smells something good in his kitchen because his mother likes to cook. When he goes to his fathers house, he doesn't seem as happy. The apartments are exactly alike, but he thinks there is a different energy between the two. He says his father's living room has a lot of fancy and expensive furniture, and his father kitchen is not as warm and welcoming as his mothers.
Percy Prep School is the combined setting for both of them. It always smells like bleach because of the constant cleanings. It is mainly rich, white folks. Only three black people attend, known as the three black musketeers.
